The exhibition features a crystal vase adorned with an image of Aksiniya on its front side. This vase was a gift from Mikhail Sholokhov to celebrate Vitaly Zakrutkin’s 75th birthday. Nikolay Bulavin, the first secretary of the Veshensky District Party Committee, came to Kochetovskaya to congratulate Vitaly Zakrutkin on his anniversary. He brought with him a colorful greeting letter from Mikhail Sholokhov, along with a large crystal vase filled with a hundred vibrant tulips. Bulavin presented this gift to Zakrutkin, wishing him a long, healthy, and happy life.

Aksiniya Astakhova is the heroine of Mikhail Sholokhov’s epic novel “And Quiet Flows the Don.” She is a Don Cossack woman and the beloved of the protagonist, Grigory Melekhov, with whom she shares a tragic fate. The vase depicts Aksiniya as a barefoot girl dressed in a wide skirt and shawl, walking toward the farm with a yoke — this is how she appears to the reader in one of the first scenes of the novel.

In an essay dedicated to Vitaly Zakrutkin, the writer Mikhail Alekseyev noted,

Mikhail Sholokhov visited Kochetovskaya several times, and he shared a long-standing friendship with Vitaly Zakrutkin. It is to him, more than anyone else, that Zakrutkin owes a decisive turn of his creative focus to the theme of the common people, to simple workers whose labor provides earthly goods for all. It was Sholokhov that taught Zakrutkin to listen carefully to the rustling of grass, distinguish the barely perceptible scents of flowers, admire the rainbow spread of eagle wings, deeply understand and feel the captivating life-giving power of the earth that nourishes a myriad of living creatures, and most importantly, of course, he taught him to pay close attention to people.

#10

Zakrutkin learned a great deal from the author of “And Quiet Flows the Don”. Along with other Don writers, he was called “an artist of the Sholokhov school”. The writers supported each other both creatively and in life.

In the Vitaly Zakrutkin Museum, many items reflect Mikhail Sholokhov’s attention to his fellow writer and loyal friend, including books, letters, telegrams, hunting gear, and this vase featuring an image of Aksiniya.
