The record of the birth of K. E. Tsiolkovsky in the metric book of the church of Nikolay Miracle-maker from Izhevsky, 1857.
When the collection of the museum was being formed, its employees made a request to the Ryazan Regional Archive in order to obtain historical documents that were directly related to Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. The archive sent an extract from the metric book, which confirmed that the scientist was born in the village of Izhevskoye, Spassky County of Ryazan Governorate. The museum exhibits some of these records.
Konstantin Tsiolkovsky wrote about his birth: ‘The weather was fine but cold on September 4, 1857. My mother took my two older brothers, six and five years old, and went for a walk with them… came back… the next day there was a new citizen of the universe Konstantin Tsiolkovsky’.
We can learn about Tsiolkovsky’s childhood and family from his autobiography. The scientist gave a great deal of thought to how parents' temperaments and personalities affect children, how they shape the characteristics of the child, push the child towards development or, conversely, slow down. For example, he mentioned that his father did not hurt anyone, but was cold: people felt shy around him. And his mother was educated and had different talents - it was she who made the future scientist interested in painting and music. According to the scientist, his development was also affected by his deafness, from which he suffered since he was a child after he had scarlet fever. For about three years he couldn’t properly study and communicate with people, and then decided to prove to others, and probably more to himself, that he was worth something. To some extent, Tsiolkovsky was isolated from his peers, older relatives and their usual activities. But he got a chance to read and think and learned not to waste time.
