The Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple
#2
The Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple is a Christian festival, one of the Twelve Great Feasts. Its iconography is based on the accounts given in the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James. The Apocrypha are ancient texts that were not included in the Church’s canon but still they were in no disagreement with the Bible.

Up to an advanced age the parents of the Virgin Mary – Anne and Joachim – were childless. The tradition holds that St. Anne prayed and promised that if she had a child she would dedicate the child to the Lord’s service. She gave birth to Mary, and three years later Mary’s parents brought her to the Temple. She was received there by the high priest with Zechariah. He took the Virgin Mary to the Holy of Holies of the ancient temple, where out of all people entered the high priest only once a year with lustral sacrificial blood. The Virgin Mary lived in the Temple for 12 years until she was betrothed to her future husband, Joseph.

About icon

#4
Icons usually depict the parents of the Virgin Mary, Mary herself on the steps of the Temple and the high priest. This tradition was followed in the icon from the collection of the Rybinsk Museum Reserve. It was painted shortly before 1834 – the date of it being used to give a blessing. The Archimandrite Photius of the Yuriev monastery and the righteous woman Anna Orlova-Chesmenskaya, the niece of Catherine the Great’s favourite Grigory Orlov, used this icon to bless Aleksey Vikharev, the governor of the Chudinovo hereditary estate in the Yaroslavl Governorate.

The Archimandrite Photius was a proponent of supervision over icon painting with the purpose of finding unskillfully painted icons; probably that was why he commissioned Palekh masters to execute the sacred image as they had a reputation for precise painting, skilful gilding and the craft they showed in decorating their work with ornamental patterns.

The faces of the saints are painted with tempera paints. Such paints were made from powdered pigments and fresh raw egg yolk. The background was covered with gold leaves applied to polyment, a special adhesive solution.

The icon embodies all the principles of icon painting: flattened figures and reverse perspective. One more principle is fulfilled – that of simultaneity: in the foreground Anne and Joachim have just come to the Temple, while in the background an angel is flying up to the Virgin Mary.

For a long while the icon was kept in the Vikharevs’ house in Bolshoye Selo not far from Yaroslavl and was passed down in the family as a heirloom. In 1988 the collection of the Rybinsk Museum Reserve got the sacred image from the Vikharevs’ descendants.
