The Synaxis of the Holy Chief-Commander Michael

The Archangel Michael is venerated in Christianity as the leader of the heavenly army and called the ‘chief commander’. He is depicted as a young man with wings and various paraphernalia: a scroll, a staff or a sphere-like mirror, which symbolises the gift of foresight.

The Old Russian icons present the Archangel Michael dressed in a suit of armor, traditional Jewish clothes of the early centuries - a chiton and a himation cape, or in the clothes of a member of the royal household since he is the warrior of the Heavenly King. In Ancient Rus, this image was used for murals in churches and for icons of the Deesis tier in the iconostasis (alter screen) - the name of the tier with the images of Christ the Almighty and those who turn to Him in prayer, the Theotokos and St. John the Baptist, as well as saints and angels.

The Synaxis (or Assembly) of the Archangel Michael is an Orthodox Christian feast in honour of all Heavenly Powers. There are nine Angelic Ranks. The closest to God are the six-winged Seraphim, four-winged tetramorph Cherubim and Thrones which are painted in the icons in the form of winged wheels with many eyes. The other Angelic Ranks are drawn with human-like bodies: they are Dominions, Powers, Authorities, Principalities, Archangels and Angels in the narrow sense.

About icon

#4
The icon from the collection of Rybinsk Museum Reserve depicts a well-arranged assembly of angels. The central circle holds the image of the Saviour Emmanuel, the name given to the Infant Jesus or Jesus the Adolescent in iconography. The circle is supported by the Cherubim and Seraphim. The image of the Archangel Michael is placed above. To His left are the Archangels: Raphael, the curer of human, Gabriel, the herald, and Uriel, the enlightener. On the righthand side, among other angels, we can find the patron saint of monks – the Archangel Jehudiel, the impelling to prayer Archangel Selaphiel and the Archangel Barachiel, the distributor of the blessings. Their names are written on their aureoles.

The icon was painted supposedly by some Yaroslavl artists in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This comes clear from the special way of painting of the highlighted areas of the clothing – open areas, a bright red-gold colour array, sophisticated colour blend on the wings, and a special way of depicting clouds in the form of flowers. Icon-painters used tempera, paint made of powder pigments mixed with an egg yolk binder.

The image settled in the museum in the early 20th century. Probably it had come from the church in the village of Arkhangelskoye, Myshkin district.
