The narrative of the icon The Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple is based on the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James. According to this text, when the Virgin Mary reached the age of three, her parents, Anna and Joachim, fulfilled their promise given to God and dedicated their child to Him. At the doorstep, the high priest Zechariah met them and introduced the Theotokos to the Holy of Holies of the Tabernacle — a portable temple in a tent. Previously, only the high priest himself was allowed to enter there, which he did once a year.

On this icon, a Nevyansk master of the second quarter of the 19th century depicted the introduction of Mary into the Holy of Holies not in the Tabernacle but in the Jerusalem Temple. The fine image of architecture suggests that the author was familiar with the features of Baroque and Classicism.
The action takes place in the inner space of the temple-rotunda with archways, narrow windows, thin columns with lush tops – capitals. The roofs of buildings and half-unrolled decorative scrolls on the margins of the icon, cartouches, are executed with a black outline on gold — in the traditions of Russian icon painting of the second half of the 17th century.
On the right side of the icon is Zechariah.

He stands on a stepped elevation, the ambon, at the entrance to the Holy of Holies of the Jerusalem Temple — this is how the high priest used to be portrayed in the late icon painting tradition. A procession approaches him: the three-year-old Mary climbs the stairs, followed by Joachim and Anna, they are surrounded by virgins who carry burning candles in their hands.
The Holy of Holies of the Temple is located behind the veil. It resembles an altar with the Tablets of the Old Testament, over it hovers a cherub — a winged heavenly being of high angel rank. This type of image is also characteristic of the late icon painting tradition and is fully in line with the Anthologion — a liturgical book that contains combinations of prayers for Christian holidays.

The very first images of the presentation of Mary in the Temple appeared in the 6th century, and in the 11th-12th centuries they were often met in Russian and Byzantine art. This icon is missing one of the traditional scenes, the feeding of the Theotokos by an angel — usually that narrative was depicted in the background of the Entry.
