The exhibition of the Museum of Far East History shows military uniforms of foreign countries: the USA, Canada, and Japan, which took part in the military intervention in the Russian Far East during the Civil War of 1918–1922.

The formal reason for intervention was to assist in the evacuation of the Czechoslovak Legion from Vladivostok. Representatives of the Entente were also concerned about the prospect of seizure of significant stocks of arms and military property, accumulated in warehouses in Vladivostok. According to the agreement between the Japanese government and the British Foreign Minister Arthur Balfour, it was Japan that was assigned the main role in establishing control over the Trans-Siberian Railway. On February 18, 1918 the Supreme Council of the Entente decided to occupy Vladivostok and Harbin, as well as the zone of the Chinese Eastern Railway by Japanese troops. On January 13, 1918 the Japanese Cabinet adopted “new principles of the political course of Japan”, according to which Russia was to be deprived of sovereign rights to the territory of the Far East.

Japanese authorities recognized the government of the Supreme Ruler of Russia Alexander Kolchak. In order to alienate the Far Eastern territories from Russia, the Japanese hatched a plan to create a buffer state under the Japanese protectorate. In 1919, the Japanese representative negotiated with Ataman Grigory Semyonov, offering him to head such a state. In addition, the Japanese provided great assistance to Ataman Semyonov in forming the Special Manchurian detachment that acted against the Bolsheviks in Transbaikalia. The Japanese sought to entrust direct combat operations against the Bolsheviks and partisans to the White Guards, but they also had to engage in heavy fighting. The majority of the population refused to submit to the rule of the interventionists. Any attempts at resistance by the local population were suppressed in the most brutal manner.

The defeat of Kolchak in late 1919 and early 1920 forced the U.S. and other powers to begin withdrawal, which was completed by April, but Japanese troop numbers continued to increase. However, the defeat of the White Movement in the Far East, problems in the Japanese economy, and diplomatic pressure from the U.S., which feared an excessive strengthening of Japan, forced the latter to begin withdrawal as well. On October 25, 1922, Japanese troops left Vladivostok.
