John Henry Bacon
Viola and the Duke

As a great graphic artist, John Henry Bacon had a fine appreciation for the expressive qualities of watercolor. He chose this technique to create miniature portraits and book illustrations. The master borrowed subjects from annals, the Bible, and William Shakespeare’s plays. For this particular work, Bacon turned to Shakespeare’s famous comedy “Twelfth Night, or What You Will”. The master’s drawings and paintings received many awards from the London Royal Academy of Arts. Starting in 1889, his artworks were displayed at all of the regular exhibitions held in London. In 1903, Bacon became an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Arts.
