Viktor Ivanovich Samoshkin is a member of the Russian Union of Painters and the International Federation of Painters. He is a master of lyrical landscape painting, and a great admirer of the nature of his native Siberia. His works have been exhibited in galleries in Ireland, Britain, Spain and France. Many of his paintings are to be found in private collections both in Russia and abroad, as well as in more than 20 museums and galleries in Russia. He frequently went out into the countryside to paint attractive scenes in the Kuzbass and Mountain Shoria regions.
In Viktor Samoshkin’s painting The First Snow in Luzhba we see the unique landscape in the Kuznetsk Alatau national nature reserve. Against a background we see an area of snow-covered forest, in all its pristine beauty, we see a homely log cabin.
In the foreground is an area of ground lightly dusted with the first snowfall. And in the distance, slender birch trees and luxuriant fir trees form a wall of woodland. Between the branches of the trees we can glimpse the steel-grey sky.
The painter uses an impasto technique, which helps him convey the texture of the snow-covered earth. In addition to using aerial perspective to create a sense of depth, the artist also uses color: light grey and whites give way to darker and deeper tones: browns, greys and greens. The artist has perfectly captured the mood of Siberia’s nature at the time when late autumn is on the wane and we feel the atmosphere of approaching winter.
Luzhba, depicted in this painting, is a popular spot with visitors, not far from the mountains of Kuznetsk Alatau, on the border between Kemerovo region and Khakassia, in Siberia. The nearest important city is Mezhdurechensk. This is the beginning of a number of popular hiking routes along the mountain ridge of Tiger- Tysh (the Teeth of the Sky).
This ridge in the Kuznetsk Alatau reserve has been a popular attraction, and a major destination for Siberian hikers and skiers since the Soviet era. The region is celebrated for its pure air, mountain rivers, boulder streams, residual rock towers, caves and other wonders of nature.
The Kuznetsk Alatau region contains the national nature reserve of the same name, which is home to many unique species of flora and fauna, many of which are protected.
