Vase “To N.S. Khrushchev”

In 1957, the movement “Catch up with Iowa in livestock production” began in Kuban. Its point was to bring the region to the same level as the American state: despite its small area, Iowa supplied milk and meat to a tenth of the entire population of the United States.

In just a year, the volume of pig harvesting in the Kuban tripled, the volume of sheep’s wool doubled, and the volume of milk increased by one and a half times. At the same time, winemaking under the slogan ‘Taman — to Soviet Champagne! ’ was developing in the ‘Myskhako’ state-owned farm and the ‘Abrau-Durso’ enterprise.

In October 1957, Krasnodar Krai was awarded the Order of V. I. Lenin ‘for the outstanding success achieved by the working people of the region in increasing the production and procurement of grain, meat, milk, eggs, and other agricultural products’. The award was handed out a year later, in October 1958, at the Krasnodar Drama Theater named after M. Gorky.

Nikita Khrushchev, Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, participated in the award ceremony. A commemorative vase made of the mineral anhydrite was manufactured specifically for him in the village of Kamennomostsky of the Maykop district. However, for an unknown reason, the gift was never handed over, and now it is housed in the Krasnodar Historical and Archaeological Museum named after E. D. Felitsyn.

The vase consists of two parts: a base with a short stable leg and a hexagonal body. The details differ in hue: the body is lighter, and the openwork bas-relief parts are pink.

On one of the sides, there is a carved image of the coat of arms of the USSR and a commemorative inscription in gilded letters, ‘To N. S. Khrushchev from the collective farmers of the Order of Lenin of Kuban’. The rest of the body are decorated with scenes, which share a common theme — the development of agriculture. Here one can see a woman who takes care of swine, one who takes care of calfs, a woman who raises poultry and a woman who collects grapes.

One of the bas-reliefs depicts a collective farmer with corncobs in her hands. During the term of Nikita Khrushchev, corn became one of the main agricultural crops, and Kuban became its largest supplier in the Soviet Union. At the same time, this plant was called the ‘queen of the fields’. Corn was so popular that it was used to produce not only cereals, flour, and animal feed, but also sweets, wine, and even chocolate.
