Ivan Shishkin was called ‘the forest knight’ and ‘the king of the woods’ already during his lifetime for his selfless devotion to the ‘forest’ theme and love for the nature of Russia. The image of the Russian forest created by him was perceived as an image of his homeland - Yelabuga, where the artist spent his youth, and of Russia as a whole.
The great Russian painter was born in 1832 in the family of a wealthy merchant, who enjoyed great respect in society and several times was elected as the city head. He was a well rounded person and wanted to give his son a good education. Therefore, the twelve-year-old boy from the city of Yelabuga encircled by dense forests was sent to Kazan - to the First city gymnasium. But after studying there for several years Ivan Shishkin returned to Yelabuga and told his parents that he was not going to become an official, so he would not return to the gymnasium. And soon Moscow painters came to Yelabuga to paint a temple, and the young man, who was fascinated by their works, decided to study painting.
First he went to Moscow - to the school of painting and architecture. There his teachers were the famous portraitist Apollon Mokritsky and academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts Karl Rabus. Afterwards Ivan Shishkin entered the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, after which he continued his studies in Germany and Switzerland.
