The sculptural portrait of Georgy Artemyevich Zedgenidze is on display at the Museum of the History of Obninsk in the section “The Institute of Medical Radiology”. The sculpture was created by Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Klykov, a Soviet and Russian sculptor, winner of the USSR State Prize, People’s Artist of the Russian Federation. His works are displayed in the Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum. The portrait of Georgy Zedgenidze was made in the 1970s and donated to the Museum of the History of Obninsk by the scientist himself.
Georgy Artemyevich Zedgenidze was a Soviet roentgenologist and radiologist, academician and founder of the Obninsk Institute of Medical Radiology of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. Born in Tbilisi in 1902, he graduated from the medical faculty of Tbilisi University and continued his studies in Leningrad. After defending his doctoral thesis and obtaining the title of professor, Georgy Artemyevich was in charge of the department of roentgenology and radiology for 20 years at the Pavlov First Leningrad Institute, and later — at the Kirov Military Naval Medical Academy.
During the Great Patriotic War Professor Zedgenidze made a great contribution to the organization of medical service in the USSR Armed Forces. He was the chief roentgenologist of the Naval Forces and supervised the work of roentgenologists working with sailors. Georgy Artemyevich demonstrated his skills as an organizer, scientist and teacher when he was Director of the Institute of Medical Radiology in Obninsk. During the 15 years he was in charge of the Institute, he created one of the world’s largest research centers, bringing together professionals in the fields of experimental and clinical radiology.
Zedgenidze personally selected the location for the institute and invited world-renowned talented scientists to key positions. Professor Nikolay Vladimirovich Timofeev-Ressovsky, a geneticist and radiobiologist, played a special role among them. Zedgenidze was keen to provide the Institute with modern equipment he had brought from trips abroad.
Today, the staff of the Institute of Medical Radiology are studying the method of ionizing radiation for diagnosing and treating numerous diseases, the effects of radiation on humans, and effective remedies for radiation sickness.
