In his works, Gennady Petukhov, a laureate of the State Prize of the Mari El Republic, continues the traditions of analytical art laid down by its founder Pavel Filonov. The artist’s worldview harmoniously combines a fascination with Buddhism and an active interest in his national roots.
Gennady Petukhov was born in Yoshkar-Ola, graduated from the Yoshkar-Ola Art College and the Surikov Moscow State Art Institute, and worked as a decorator at the M. Shketan National Theater. The artist has participated in international, All-Russian, regional, republican and city exhibitions and art projects. His works are kept in museum and private collections in Russia and abroad.
Petukhov actively uses painting techniques of analytical art, scrupulously filling up the space of the canvas and working through each part in his characteristic “crystal” manner of painting. This approach combines painting techniques with metaphorical, symbolic content. Gennady Petukhov considers the canvas to be a peculiar macrocosm, a huge patterned carpet, where each part has its own special place. In the works of Gennady Petukhov, real forms, symbolic elements and details of ethnic ornament, intertwining with each other, flowing and changing, create a special multidimensional space where this inseparable connection between various objects and phenomena is distinctly presented and translated into the figurative language of art. In particular, in such works as “The Duck” (2017), where the artist refers to the myths and legends of the people, their customs and traditions, which immerse the viewer in the world of the traditional Mari religion.
The image of the Mother Duck in the Mari culture is very special. She is the creator of earth. The duck is an intermediary between the three worlds. Since ancient times, she was revered as a divine bird, progenitrix and savior. It is no coincidence that the silhouette of the Mother Duck seems to disappear into this space and simultaneously to absorb the entire surrounding world. The main idea of the work is to convey the unity of all things and the inseparable connection of the past, present and future, the space of reality and the space of myth.
