The exhibition “The Feat of the Army” tells the story of the most important battles of the Great Patriotic War. “Lessons of the War” by the famous Soviet painter Genrikh Kilpe is dedicated to the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation.

The Soviet offensive culminated in the triumphant victory and the raising of the red banner over the defeated Reichstag.

On April 29, an attempt was made to capture the Reichstag quickly. However, to break the defense of the building, it was necessary to cover the flanks, which is why the Kroll Opera House was attacked at first. The German forces fought back stubbornly but by the evening of April 30, the Red Army managed to take the Reichstag building under control. At nightfall, the banner group of Mikhail Yegorov and Meliton Kantaria, led by captain Alexey Berest and covered by the gunner troop of Ilya Syanov, raised the Victory Banner on the dome of the Reichstag.
The battle book of the 1st Belorussian Front of April 30, 1945 reads,

The battle for the Reichstag continued until the complete defeat of the German forces in the morning of May 1, 1945. A banner was raised on the top (the dome) of the Reichstag building in the early hours of May 1, 1945, by sergeants Yegorov and Kantaria of rifle regiment 1/756, rifle division 150.

However, some German troops remained inside the building. They capitulated only on May 2, when the instrument of surrender was signed.

While the Red Army was fighting for the first floor of the Reichstag building, another major dramatic event of World War II took place in Berlin’s Government District. Between 15:10 and 15:30, Adolf Hitler committed suicide.
The Battle of Berlin ended. While the Germans expected to hold the city for months, it fell in only ten days. This was achieved by the talented leadership of the Soviet military commanders, the competence, skill, and valor of soldiers, and the advanced military equipment.

Between April 16 and May 8, three Soviet fronts reported 81,116 dead and 274,181 wounded. The German losses are estimated at 400 thousand killed and 380 thousand captured, but these numbers do not include the losses of the Volkssturm militia, the German police, the Hitler Youth, and the Organisation Todt.

The Battle of Berlin was included in the Guinness Book of Records as one of the largest battles in history.
