In his work Rue du Mont-Cenis, Montmartre, the artist reveals the modest beauty of a Paris corner. Utrillo prefers his own “straightforward” view of his motif to wide panoramic views. Depicting one of his favorite streets of Montmartre, the artist works in an exquisite, cold, almost monochromatic color scheme, just a little enlivened by splashes of red and pink tones. Utrillo, who soaked up the Montmartre atmosphere from a tender age, tried to convey not the exact details but the spirit of his beloved Parisian district. The deserted Rue de Mont-Cenis is full of lyrical melancholy. A similar mood is typical for many views of Montmartre painted by Maurice Utrillo.
