Maurice Utrillo is represented in the museum by two works. The painting White House belongs to the so-called “white period, " which owes its name to the dominating white color in the palette. Depicting crooked house walls, Utrillo achieves the finest tones. His white color is full of hues: lilac, greenish, blue. Figures of people and trees are marked with contrasting blue, black, brown, and green colors that emphasize the whiteness of the walls. The matte finish is characteristic of the texture of the artist’s works. He achieved this effect by mixing paint with plaster, lime, sand, and glue. A note of sadness sounds in the painting’s atmosphere. Utrillo himself called artworks with these motifs “tragic houses.”
