In July 1897, the artist Osip Emmanuilovich Braz lived at the Chekhovs’ estate in Melikhovo, where he painted a portrait of Anton Chekhov for the Tretyakov Gallery on Pavel Tretyakov’s commission. Chekhov did not like that portrait very much. Its fate is unknown. According to one version, it was destroyed by Braz himself. Later, the artist decided to paint another portrait of the writer. In 1898, he visited Anton Pavlovich in Nice, and completed his work.
This portrait became one of the most famous images of Anton Pavlovich and is on display in the Tretyakov Gallery, although the writer himself did not like it either:
