The Melikhovo estate outside Moscow, where Anton Chekhov lived for seven years, is the writer’s first own home, his favorite orchard and vegetable garden, his medical practice and 42 works he wrote there.
Chekhov bought a house in Melikhovo in the winter of 1892, and in March, the whole family moved there — the writer’s parents, his brothers and sister. Together, the Chekhovs refurbished the house, planted trees, and designed the garden. In Melikhovo the writer created the plays “The Seagull” and “Uncle Vanya”, stories “Ward No. 6”, “The Man in the Case”, “The House with a Mezzanine”, “About Love”, and “The Black Monk”.
Anton Pavlovich liked to give names to every corner of his estate: the farmyard and outbuildings were “The Naive Yard”, the vegetable garden with rare plants — “The South of France”, the pond — “The Aquarium” and “The Alley of Love”, where the heart’s desires come true. Chekhov built three schools, roads and a post office in Melikhovo, treated people for free even during a cholera epidemic, raised funds for fire victims and starving people.
After Anton Chekhov moved to Yalta, the estate was sold, and the museum opened only 40 years later. The Manor House was fully restored from drawings, sketches, and memoirs. Today, the collection of the museum “Melikhovo” includes 30 thousand exhibits, including autographs of Anton Chekhov, his personal belongings such as his coat, pince-nez, inkstand; photographs, paintings by Isaac Levitan and Vasily Polenov, and books.
Actors, directors, playwrights, and admirers of the writer’s talent come to Melikhovo. Melikhovo Theatre “Chekhov Studio” is now open in the village, and the museum hosts an annual festival “Melikhovo Spring”.
