Volgograd local history museum keeps the memorial material of the participants of the Battle of Stalingrad, revealing the feat of military and civilians during the defense of the city. Important documentary evidence of the feat of the defenders of Stalingrad are certificates to the medal “For the Defense of Stalingrad”. Behind each of them is the fate of a particular person — a participant of the war, as well as the meticulous work of the museum’s researchers in completing the collection and its study. At present the museum holds the material of more than 80 people awarded with the medal “For the Defense of Stalingrad”. The collection is continuously expanded.

The greatest number of certificates was handed out by the Stalingrad City Executive Committee in the period from 19 May 1943 to 3 January 1950. The rest were handed out by district military committees or commanders of military units. Among the awardees are men and women, soldiers and officers, civilians.

The exhibition “Two hundred Stalingrad’s Days and Nights” displays three certificates from the museum’s collections — those of M. Matrosov, V. Volobuev and V. Matyushechkina.
