Nikolay Nikolaevich Kovalev was a graphic artist, book illustrator and painter.
He was born on May 1, 1937 in Stavropol. In 1955, he finished the secondary art school at the Academy of Arts, and in 1967 he graduated from the graphic department in the class of Mikhail Afanasyevich Taranov at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after Ilya Repin. In the same year, he was offered a job by the director of the Murmansk Regional Book Publishing House and moved to Murmansk.
From 1967 to 1972, he worked at the publishing house as an art editor and illustrator. Nikolai Kovalev designed many books published by the publishing houses of Murmansk and Moscow.
The artist worked in different graphic techniques: watercolor, gouache, charcoal, linocut, and lithography. In the early 1980s, he began painting.
The artist’s works are housed in museums and private collections in Russia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Holland, Germany, and the USA.
The artist was also engaged in art criticism, writing texts about art and artists. Kovalev is the author of articles about the Leningrad graphic artists and illustrators Boris Vlasov, Nikita Charushin, and Vladimir Sterligov, about the Murmansk artists and writers. Nikolay Nikolaevich is the author of collections of poems “Fate on Installment Plan”, “Snow of the Decline Time”, “November Happiness”, and an essay on art history “The Fine Art of Murman”.
Kovalev became an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation in 2001, he won the Silver medal of the Russian Academy of Arts for a series of book and easel graphics.
The work “By the Sea” seems to grow out of travel notes or memories: a leisurely conversation on the sunset seacoast, two people on the deserted beach who seem to be captured in the moment, forever remaining in the artist’s memory.
