Alexander Viktorovich Moravov was a Russian and Soviet painter. He was born on December 20, 1878, into the family of a doctor in Ukraine. The choice of his life path was greatly influenced by his father’s close friends — the artists Mikhail Vrubel and Nikolay Ge. Moravov studied with such masters as Abram Arkhipov, Nikolay Kasatkin, Alexey Korin, and in the workshop of Valentin Serov. After graduating from college, he participated in exhibitions of the Association of Wanderers and gave classes to chromolithographers and book graphic illustrators.
In 1909, Moravov worked on illustrations for children’s stories by Leo Tolstoy, and the writer’s wife Sophia Andreyevna invited the artist to Yasnaya Polyana. The painter stayed with the writer for several days. Leo Tolstoy invited Moravov to paint his portrait.
