In the early 1950s, the Soviet government announced the creation of titanium production in the USSR as a major political and economic task. Then it was decided to construct a titanium-magnesium plant with an annual production of 8 thousand tons of titanium in ingots to expand the Berezniki magnesium plant.
Sponge titanium is titanium metal obtained by reducing titanium chloride with magnesium metal or sodium at high temperatures. Titanium sponge is lightweight, high strength, corrosion resistant in many corrosive environments and in seawater, has a high melting point.
It is an almost multi-purpose construction material for extreme conditions. The sponge is also used to produce titanium-based alloys, and is widely used in aerospace, chemical, medicine and other industries.
On February 8, 1960, the first industrial titanium in Russia was produced at the BereznikI titanium-magnesium integrated plant. Immediately after the start-up of the reduction workshop, the metallurgical plant was retrofitted, while its equipment and titanium sponge processes were upgraded.
In 1966, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, the BereznikI Titanium and Magnesium Integrated Plant was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
In 1970, after the completion of the second stage of retrofitting, the plant started operations at full capacity. In 1971 - 1975, 15 products were granted the State Quality Mark. By 1975, half of the plant’s production was titanium of the highest quality standard.
On September 26, 1990, the Berezniki Titanium and Magnesium Integrated Plant was given a new name AVISMA (an abbreviation for “aircraft building materials”). The company name was recognized in the world market.
“AVISMA Titanium-Magnesium Integrated Plant” joint-stock company was founded in 1992. On July 1, 2005 JSC AVISMA was reorganized into “VSMPO-AVISMA” - VErkhnyaya SAlda Metallurgical Production Association - Aircraft Building Materials.
The corporation includes two industrial sites - “VSMPO” in VErkhnyaya SAlda town, Sverdlovsk region and “AvIsma”, a branch in BereznikI, Perm region, which are interconnected by a single process chain. Today, VSMPO-AvIsma is the world’s largest titanium producer, the only company in the world that carries out a full cycle of titanium production - from raw materials processing to final products.
