Having achieved international fame, Gherman Stepanovich Titov never stopped his efforts in development and self-improvement. He continued to study space-related sciences, follow the latest engineering ideas, and explore the achievements of technological progress.

In particular, on September 1, 1961, he entered the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy named after a Russian mechanical scientist, the founder of aerodynamics. According to Titov’s memoirs, in many respects, it was due to the chief designer Sergei Korolev,

Titov — together with Gagarin, Popovich, Nelyubov, Bykovsky, and other fighter pilots — studied there for almost seven years, until January 1968. Titov specialized in “Manned aircraft and spacecraft and engines for them”. After the Academy, the graduates received — for the first time in history — the qualification of “Pilot-Engineer-Cosmonaut”.

After that, Gherman Titov entered the full-time department at the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR. To this day, the lecture notes of student Titov, made by him during his years of study, have been kept.

Later, the famous cosmonaut had to act three times as the chairman of the State Examination Commission. According to the procedure in effect at the time, he had to personally attend the defense of graduation projects of all candidates for gold medals. And Gherman Stepanovich tried to observe the rule without fail — he prepared for each defense, studied explanatory notes to graduation projects, and talked with authors and their supervisors. Back then, the Academy trained specialists in almost 30 areas. Gherman Titov would never ask formal, general questions at the defense, always focusing on the substance, since the level of his own engineering knowledge was very high, indeed.
