The tailpiece of the tastar is the ornamented ending of the Bashkir towel-like female headdress. By the twentieth century, embroidered tastars were practically out of use, whole headdresses are extremely rare, so the main part of the museum collections is made up of ornamented tailpieces.

Tastar in the eastern, northeastern Bashkirs was a towel-like piece of homespun canvas with embroidered ends, reaching a length of three meters. Bashkir women from the southern and central regions of the region wore tastar in the form of a piece of chintz of light shades up to two meters long.

In his monograph, Sergei Ivanovich Rudenko notes that in the case of tastars with embroidered endings, elderly women wrapped their heads and tied it in such a way as to leave their face open, with one embroidered end lying on the chest and the other on the back.

Homespun canvas was embroidered using fine, expensive silk. The silhouette of the embroidery pattern was laid with a contour seam — painting. Small figures behind the contour were also embroidered with painting: hooks, forks, diamonds, antennae, triangles-combs and others.

In her book ‘Ornament for counting Bashkir embroidery’ Elena Evgenievna Nechvaloda singles out four main groups of Tastar tailpieces based on ornament and embroidery technique. The first one is based on the compositional construction of the main ornament, two large complex rosettes, embroidered using the technique of double-sided surface in combination with painting. The second — the tailpiece with a composition of several horizontal stripes with different embroidered counting satin stitch ornaments. The third is the tailpiece, decorated with several rows of very simple geometric shapes with stepped outlines, executed with a satin stitch brick. The fourth group was decorated with several ornamental fields with a geometric pattern: rhombuses, oblique crosses, lattices, etc., made with line embroidery.

This first group can be attributed to the end of the tastar, in the ornament of which eight-pointed stars and rhombuses with extended sides are combined into a composite rosette. Stripes of colored fabric, most often red, were sewn to the ends.
