Svetlana Genrikhovna Shpedt is a professional artist and an amazing talent. She was born in the Republic of Khakassia, but has spent most of her life in the city of Mezhdurechensk. She graduated from the graphic arts faculty of Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University. She taught in the School of Art, and School of Painting. She paints in several different media: oils, watercolor and gouache. Viewers are attracted by the rich colors in her paintings and their polished technique.

Svetlana Shpedt takes her inspiration from the beauty of her region. In her paintings she depicts Siberia’s nature and scenery, at once profound and joyful. Her paintings are filled with such a light, pure atmosphere, and the landscapes she depicts are so enchanting, that they make the viewer want to see these scenes with their own eyes.

From graceful autumn landscapes with golden-leaved trees and strikingly tender views of wide open spaces in winter, to snowbells dancing in the light spring breeze and bracing summer rainstorms and clear lakes and rivers — the artist depicts the landscape in all its seasonal variety. Her work is full of a sense of harmony and vibrant poetry.

Svetlana Shpedt has painted a series of pictures that celebrate the city in which she grew up. The Poplars, which depicts an old street in Mezhdurechensk, has a static and enclosed composition. In the foreground we see a line of poplars, trees that all city dwellers have been familiar with since childhood. Like old statues that have been part of the scenery for decades, these trees are a silent witness to the life of the city. They have seen generations of residents come and go, and have watched the Pearl of the Kuzbass act out its unique history.

The poplar tree is a symbol of refinement and youth. In Svetlana Shpedt’s painting it is a symbol of the young, dynamic and prosperous city of Mezhdurechensk.

In the background of the painting we see a ‘Khrushchovka’ apartment block, a familiar part of any Soviet-era cityscape. These buildings represent a whole era in the history of the city, and the country. Concrete panel and brick blocks like this were built as a replacement for the original, temporary buildings in Tomusa, as the city was previously known.

They were named after Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev, who was the Soviet leaver during the period when they were constructed in huge numbers. As if in a mirror, these buildings reflect the rise and growth of Mezhdurechensk. They still account for the majority of the flats in the city.

The calm and restrained tones in this painting are obtained by combining three main colors — white grey and black, in varying proportions. This winter cityscape conveys a feeling of peace and comfort.
