The last pre-war order concerning military equipment was the order of the First Deputy People’s Commissar of Defense of the USSR Marshal Semyon Budyonny, dated from January 31, 1941. It established full and lightweight versions of the battle and field equipment kit for the infantry. An obligatory element of the uniform was a spare cartridge pouch made of fabric, which could be attached to the waist belt with special loops. It held 30 rounds.

Even though a lot of equipment was produced in the Soviet Union, it was almost gone by the middle of 1942. This is because most of the pre-war equipment was destroyed in the first months of the war, including the warehouses in the occupied territories. The military industry started producing simpler and cheaper equipment, which included the spare cartridge pouch. Such pouches of the period of the Great Patriotic War are classified as rare finds in modern archaeology.

The item presented in the museum belonged to a participant of the Great Patriotic War Nikolai Nagibin. He was born into a peasant family in 1900 in the village of Novo-Nikolsk in the Ust-Ishimsky district, Omsk Oblast. He finished two classes of an elementary school in the village of Grakovka. He was not a member of the Komsomol or the Communist Party. In Nagibin’s military service card was written: “initial civilian occupation — agriculture, social status — peasant, collective farmer”.

Nagibin was called up for military service in May 1920 and enlisted in the 120th separate Machine-Gun Battalion, in which he served until June 1923. On September 15, 1941, due to the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, he was again called up to the Red Army and enlisted as a light machine gunner in the 1210th Rifle Regiment.
The soldiers of these rifle regiments were armed with a light machine gun, which, unlike the medium machine gun, could be carried by one soldier and did not require additional devices.

On March 1, 1942, Nagibin was wounded. He was treated in an army field hospital until the end of April, and after being discharged he fought again, but this time as part of the 190th Rifle Regiment. On October 1, Nagibin was wounded for the second time. On October 12, he was enlisted in the 130th Guards Rifle Regiment as a light machine gunner.

On November 23, 1943, Nagibin received his third war wound and was treated in a medical evacuation hospital until December 2. He was discharged from the Red Army due to his injury. For his military services Nagibin was awarded the medal “For the Victory over Germany” in 1946, and the Order of Glory medal 3rd class in 1951.
