Large and horizontally elongated bags were called “khir”. They were travel bags used as a kind of suitcases. In these bags the Khanty kept soft things, fur clothes and house shoes. For street shoes, bags were made completely different — they were made from thick cloth and elongated vertically.

“Caslanie” is the migration of the entire camp together with the reindeer in search of new rich lands. “Caslanie” is necessary because the deer cannot graze for a long time on the same pastures, they do not have enough food. Also, constant moving is caused by the climate: in winter, reindeer herders move to the southern regions, and in summer they wander to the north, closer to the sea and away from the midges.

Most often, the khir was sewn from a short-haired hard hide taken from the frontal part of a deer’s head. The top consisted of a strip of “rovduga” — tanned leather, which occupied about a third of the entire bag and was fixed with special ties.

Only the front of these large bags was decorated. In some cases, two or four wide ribbons with geometric patterns were used, which were separated from each other by strips of either light and dark kamus, or dyed deerskin. There could be from one to five dividing strips, depending on the number, their width varied. The vertical stripes at the top and bottom were edged with contrasting fur or leather, and sometimes with a patterned ribbon.

In other cases, the front of the bag was decorated with both geometric patterns and stylized images. It consisted of simple elements: corners, straight and oblique crosses, rhombuses — and most often symbolized the animal world of the North.

For example, the ornament “hare ears” represented a schematically depicted head of a hare, the “elbow of a fox” looked like a fox’s paw when the animal is running, “a squirrel’s track” resembled its traces in the snow. Sometimes there were more complex stylized images — “a man on a horse”, “a cedar cone” and others.

The bag could be decorated in both techniques at once. Then, between the zones with stylized images, patterned ribbons or stripes with alternating dark-and-white squares were sewn.

Over time, the Khanty improved the decor of this type of bags. Often the frontal skins were decorated in the form of a patterned mosaic, so the bag became completely ornamented. Only summer skins were used.
