The museum collection includes a two-pedestal desk on four carved legs. Its rectangular desk top is covered with red cloth and decorated with a carved wooden balustrade and two wooden candle holders. Each pedestal has one drawer, decorated with wooden rosettes. Between the pedestals, under the desk top is a drawer.

In the early 20th century, the desk stood in the study of Natalia Pavlovna Nekrasova, the second wife of Fyodor Alexeyevich Nekrasov, the poet’s brother.

Fyodor Alexeyevich married his first wife, Sofya Ivanovna Miller in 1864, who died in 1870. In 1872, Fyodor Alexeyevich married a second time. His wife was Natalia Pavlovna Alexandrova, the younger sister of his children’s governess.

Nikolay Nekrasov wrote to their sister Anna Butkevich about his brother’s second marriage:

Here’s news for you: he married Natalia Pavlovna — you probably remember her — blond, the best of the three sisters, whom we praised… She is also here, and seems to be a good woman… she behaves modestly, and she is far from being stupid.

The poet met his brother’s future wife in 1872 in Karabikha. Natalia Pavlovna came to visit her sister after graduation from the institute. She was 22 years old. Nikolay Alexeyevich learned about his brother’s affair that same summer. When the poet was leaving for Saint Petersburg, his family were at the station to bid goodbye to him, and Nekrasov recited an impromptu poem dedicated to Natalia Pavlovna,

I was trying to read what is hidden in your heart in the moments of freedom
There are undoubtedly noble features
of Russian women in your soul.
You are so rich in young charm,
There is so much sense of duty in you,
That I will leave my beloved brother to his fate.

Nikolay Alexeyevich retained his sympathy for Natalia Pavlovna for the rest of his life.

The Nekrasovs were married in Moscow in the church of Sergius Pushkar on September 17, 1872. Later, they visited Moscow every fall.

After the 1917 revolution, this ladies’ desk belonged to the family of Vera Fyodorovna Andreeva (Nekrasova), daughter of Natalia Pavlovna. It was handed over to the museum in 1996 by Vera Fyodorovna’s granddaughter Elena Alexandrovna, who had it at her summer house since the 1970s.
