‘for the first time ever asked to send for a doctor. After that he asked for a glass of champagne. Anton Pavlovich sat down and said loudly and meaningfully, addressing the doctor (he spoke little German): “Ich sterbe”. Then he repeated the phrase in Russian for myself and for the student: “I am dying”. After that he took the glass, turned his face to me giving his marvelous smile, and said: “It has been a while since I drank champagne last time…”, drank the glass dry, turned to his left side quietly and soon fell silent forever’.

The body of the deceased was delivered to Moscow. The funeral was organized by the editorial staff of ‘Russkaya Mysl’ (Russian Thought) magazine. The writer’s younger brother MikhaIl learned about the death of his brother July 3, in Yalta. Together with their mother, brother Ivan and sister Maria they went to Moscow from Yalta and arrived just in time for the burial. At that time Chekhov’s body was carried from Nikolaevsky railway station to the Novo-Devichi Convent. ‘Immense numbers of people followed the funeral procession’, – Mikhail remembered. 20 000 people took part in the funeral, many students helped handling the crowd.
3 July, upon the receipt of the news of the writer’s death in Yalta, a funeral service was performed for him in St. Theodore Tyron church located near Chekhov’s house. The picture of the church and the announcement of the funeral service are displayed on the panel. The announcement reads: ‘Today, 3 July, Saturday, a funeral service will be performed at 8:00 pm. in St. Theodore Tyron located in Verkhnyaya Autka, for the deceased writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov’.
Under the announcement there is a picture of Chekhov’s grave with a mortuary monument by a famous sculptor Brailovsky. Chekhov was buried near his father Pavel, at Novo-Devichi cemetery in Moscow.
To the right of the announcement there is a picture of the monument to Chekhov in Badenweiler. The monument was opened in 1908, before a vast assembly of the public, and simultaneously, a memorial plate was established. Chekhov was the first and only Russian writer whose memory was honored by a monument installed abroad. Even in his birthplace, Taganrog, the monument was installed much later, in 1935.
