On behalf of the Yalta Charity Society for the Care of Non-resident Sick People, Chekhov wrote an appeal describing a distress situation of the sick people and asking all “kind-hearted people wherever they live” that they make donations to the poor diseased. “Whatever modest the amount, even several kopecks, it will be accepted with many thanks”, – the appeal stressed.
Chekhov’s appeal was published in the metropolitan and provincial newspapers. The writer involved many of his friends and family members into the charitable act. The money raised throughout the country allowed the Yalta charitable society comprising mainly socially active doctors, to organize a resort hotel for 20 guests, called ‘Yauzlar’. But it was not enough.
In the end of 1902, Chekhov wrote a second appeal where he raised the issue of arranging a sanatorium for 40-50 patients. And again, funds were raised for that. Out of the total of 45000 roubles, 5000 were donated personally by Chekhov. A house was purchased at the outskirts of Yalta, and then rebuilt into a sanatorium also called ‘Yauzlar’. At that time it was one of the first popular sanatoriums for the poor tubercular patients in Yalta.
