The presented list of wines planned for purchase was written down by the hand of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky on a sheet of paper. The wine list mentions the Moscow Deprez Wine Trade Association.

A captain of the Napoleonic army wounded in the Battle of Borodino, Philippe Deprez, after recovering, did not return to his homeland, but remained in Russia. He married Anna Riess, a nurse who cared for him, and opened a wine trading company and the first store of foreign wines in Moscow. His business was successfully continued by his heirs.

Tchaikovsky loved to receive guests and often participated in feasts and binges. In 1872, he invited his friend, the architect Ivan Klimenko, to one of these evenings. He sent him the following invitation,

We want to play four hands with Kashkin tonight, but under the essential condition that you also be there. Answer me immediately, if you can be and how early? I think around eight o’clock would be great. The gathering is at my house.
After playing, we’ll take a timeout,

Fresh caviar will be served,
Purified vodka will come out
And maybe even herring, much deserved.
Peter the Great.

Clearly, the composer’s friend, music critic and teacher Nikolay Dmitriyevich Kashkin himself became the subject of jokes. In a letter to Jurgenson dated March 15, 1878, Tchaikovsky writes,

What is a binge without Kashkin? It is like a garden without trees, a pie without filling, <…> the Moscow audience without the Italian opera, a Jurgenson’s edition without typos, Nikolay Lvovich [Bochechkarov] without his inherent stupidity, Sofia Ivanovna [Jurgenson] without an office of announcements, <…> a Klindworth dinner without fat pudding, Rubinstein without Agafon [his servant].

The range of alcoholic beverages that the composer consumed according to various sources was diverse. It consisted mainly of vodka and cognac, as well as beer, various wines and champagnes, grog, absinthe, punch, rum and others. However, vodka in the modern sense of the word did not exist in Russia until the late 19th century. Vodka was the name of distillate drinks of different strength and different taste (depending on both the raw ingredients and numerous additives), as well as polugars (vodkas with the strength of 38% alc.), alcoholic herbal tinctures and nalewki.

Tchaikovsky often went to have a drink at a tavern with his friends and colleagues, for instance, the Great Moscow Tavern on Voskresenskaya Square, known in the mid-19th century as Gurin’s Tavern and the Testov’s Great Patrikeyevsky Tavern. These were places for meetings with colleagues, having breakfasts or dinners after visiting the theater.
