Such icons present a strictly frontal image of Jesus Christ as the Heavenly King, with the New Testament or a scroll in His left hand. His right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing. They paint the Saviour in the same clothing He wore during His earthly life - a chiton shirt and a thick upper cape called himation.
