The iconographic type Christ the Almighty is the main canonical image of Christ. This theme is also called Christ Pantocrator from the Greek omnipotent, all-powerful. Such icons present a strictly frontal image of Jesus Christ as the Heavenly King, with the New Testament or a scroll in His left hand. His right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing. They paint the Saviour in the same clothing He wore during His earthly life - a chiton shirt and a thick upper cape called himation.

This iconographic type was formed in the 4th-6th centuries. The first images of Christ the Almighty were painted in Russia back in the pre-Mongolian times.

About icon

#4
The icon from the collection of the Rybinsk Museum Reserve was created in the early 19th century. It is not dated or signed, but researchers suggest that it was created by artists form the old believers community who lived in the town of Romanov-Borisoglebsk, now known as Tutaev. The golden age of the Romanov iconography corresponds with the late 18th – early 19th centuries. Dynasties of icon painters preserved and passed from generation to generation tracing-paper copies and repaints, i.e. unfinished icons on parchment and some other material where the main figures and lines of the source image had been copied in a special way.

Icons painted by the Romanov group of artists were mainly commissioned by wealthy industrialists and merchants; they were exclusive pieces of art. The images were characterized by sophistication of painting, perfect geometry of forms and meticulously drawn architectural objects.

The icon Christ the Almighty belongs to the same icon-painting tradition. Jesus is depicted in royal robes: the neck of the chiton and the maniples of the chiton sleeves are embroidered with precious stones and pearl threads. The stones were depicted using droplets of pigmented lacquer, and pearls – with the white pigment mixed with an egg-based binding material. The same fine painting can be seen on the skillfully decorated margins that are covered with complex floral patterns, gralands and curls.

The icon entered the museum from the village of Gubino, ten kilometers away from Rybinsk. The image was the central one in the so-called Deisis comprised of three icons: those of Christ, the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist. The icons of small Deises were not big in size; they were usually in private houses.
