A bebut is one of the main types of Caucasian daggers. It has a curved blade with one cutting edge or both edges sharpened. The length of a bebut dagger usually does not exceed 60 centimeters, and the blade has fullers — narrow grooves. In 1907, by Order No. 287 of the Military Department, the bebut dagger was adopted by the Russian army.

Alexander Nikolaevich Kulinsky, chief curator of the Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps, in his book “Russian Edged Weapons of Soldiers, Sailors and Civilians of 1800–1917”, wrote about the bebut as follows:

In 1907, the dagger replaced the shashkas [sabers] of all lower ranks of gendarmes, except for the Wachtmeister and servicemen of serf gendarmes teams and units. In 1908, it was adopted by the lower ranks of machine gun teams. In 1909, it replaced the shashkas of all lower ranks of the artillery troops, except for mounted and mountain artillery, feldwebel and feuerwerker officers in the field, mountain and park artillery units, as well as trumpeters of field artillery command. In 1910, shashkas were returned to the lower ranks of gendarmes. In the same year, it was adopted by the lower ranks of mounted scouts of infantry regiments.

New rapid-firing guns, which entered service with the artillery troops at the beginning of the 20th century, required the soldiers to work fast, and the artillery saber hindered movements, which is why, over time, the Main Artillery Directorate decided to adopt new weapons. The bebut dagger was officially in service with the army until the revolution of 1917. However, it did not come out of use later.

Alexander Kulinsky described the features of a specific type of bebut daggers: “During the First World War, the lower ranks of machine-gun teams were also armed with a dagger with a straight double-edged blade, rhombic in cross-section. Its total length reached 600 mm, the length of the blade was about 440 mm, and the width of the blade was 33 mm.”

The blade from the museum’s collection has two fullers on each side. The shaped handle is made of wood. It is narrower in the middle part. It consists of grip panels secured with two rivets. The wooden scabbard is painted black.
