Folding iconostasis. The Twelve Great Feasts
#3
Warriors and pilgrims often had to pray during travel; refugees and prisoners did not have the opportunity to get in the temple. Therefore, in addition to portable miniature icon pendants there were also transportable iconostases. Folding icons were Old Believers’ portable icons. The folds of such iconostases could be closed and become compact.

Initially, craftsmen made tree-leaved folding icons. Those icons depicted the Twelve Great Feasts that were celebrated before and after the Great Easter. The folds were hinged and decorated with kokoshniks – peaked tops. Kokoshniks always represented the scenes of the Crucifix with Bystanders, the New Testament Trinity, the Eulogy of the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Elevation of the Holy Cross.

Folding iconostasis. The Twelve Great Feasts. Old Believers’ type (front and back)

Displayed The Twelve Great Feasts is iconostasis made in the early 18th century. It is also known as the Big Holy Day Folds. The far left fold is lost; it included five compositions on Biblical subjects: the Annunciation, the Nativity of Christ, the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Presentation to the Temple, the Crucifixion with the Bystanders (on the top).

According to the Old Believers’ tradition, when sons left their fathers’ home and left to their own ones, the iconostasis was then disassembled to separate folds that were given to new families as talismans. Therefore, only few iconostases with all four folds have been preserved, and common are separate folds of a festive folding icon.

Rectangular folds with wide edges were cast from copper alloy and enamelled. The images of 15 iconographic compositions from the Gospel were applied on them in the canonical order.

The first fold on the left side depicted the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple, the Baptism of Christ, the Transfiguration of Christ, the Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, and the New Testament Trinity. The key scene of the central fold was the Exhalation of the Cross, and on the sides were the Resurrection of Christ – the Resurrection of Christ, the Ascension of Christ, the Trinity of the Old Testament, and the Repose of the Virgin. The right fold represented the figure of the Mother of God and chosen saints.
This folding icon was made by an unknown artist. It is decorated with white and dark blue enamels. On the back side of the central fold, the Golgotha eight-pointed cross, a spear and a cane are cast in an oval shape. There is an image of the skull of Adam at the Cross. Jerusalem walls and towers are shown against the background of floral ornaments. Under the peaks of the kokoshniks there is an eight-line inscription: We worship your cross, the Lord, and glorify your bright Resurrection.
