Semyon Nikolaevich Korsakov (1787—1853) — thinker, naturalist, encyclopedist, owner of the Tarusovo estate near Moscow) — was father of a large family. His manor house kept memory of several generations of his family in portraits, photographs, silhouettes, drawings and notebooks.

Semyon Nikolaevich and his wife Sophia Nikolaevna (1797-1877) had 11 children, two of them died in infancy. Children shared all the favourite avocations of their father.

In Tarusovo the physics home laboratory was equipped with telescope, electric machine and various devices for conducting experiments. The visitors compared the home observatory with the St. Petersburg Observatory in Pulkovo.

The world of plants and insects was studied with microscope; there was equipped a meteorological station. Mastered the shorthand, Semyon Nikolaevich was making verbatim records in his notebooks on the weather changes.

Professional artists, including the famous Swedish photographer and artist Karl Peter Mazer, gave drawing and painting lessons to the children.

Semyon Nikolaevich, a very good painter, sought to obtain the most accurate picture of objects. Even in his youth, he became interested in camera obscura, which was replaced by camera lucida.

Favourite entertainment in the family was making silhouette portraits using silhouette graph – a device consisting of translucent glass and pantograph, which automatically reduced the contours of the depicted object. Obtained silhouette on black paper was glued on light background and edged into a frame under the glass. Such family portraits decorated the walls of the manor house.

The photographic darkroom was in a small hut at Tarusovo house. In the manor park there was a meadow of amusements with gymnastic shells. At home, children’s physical exercises followed their mental studies. Children of Korsakov’s put home performances, were fond of dramatic reading, cut out puppets for a puppet theater and issued a handwritten family magazine “Zemlyak” (Countryman).

Korsakov’s children acquired a brilliant home education. The boys chose the military career. The girls, perfect in painting, engaged in music, crafts, have become the guardians of home hearths.

The unique archive of Korsakov’s family and their family library in 1918 were nationalized and transferred from Tarusovo to the Rumyantsev Museum in Moscow. Soon there was a fire in the manor house and the house burned down.
