A Portrait of Mordvinov Boy

The portrait depicts Count Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Mordvinov Jr. at the age of 13 (1887—1950).

Aleksandr Mordvinov Jr. was a great-grandson of the outstanding politician Admiral N.S. Mordvinov, and a son of Count Mordvinov – the Equerry of the Highest Court and the leader of the nobility of Saint Petersburg Governorate.

He was a passionate admirer of automobilism and enthusiast of motorsport, contributing to its development in Russia. He was also a frequent participant and organizer of many Russian competitions, despite the fact that most of the time he lived in Paris.

One of the most significant victories was gained by him in 1909, at the races of the magazine Automobile on Volkhovskoe Road near St. Petersburg, where A. Mordvinov had set a Russian speed record of 131.5 km/h.

With the outbreak of the First World War, Mordvinov joined the French Foreign Legion as a soldier. At the end of 1914, he returned to Russia; in August 1915, he was sent to France with an assignment from the Main Military-Technical Department of the Russian Army to promote ‘the production in Russia of special steel for forging shafts for aircraft engines and the development of a type of 300-horsepower engine’. He remained in Paris, where he died; buried in Passy Cemetery.
