Competition between Omsk and Leningrad
#2
In the 1950一1960s, one of the main aims of the government was to create green spaces in Soviet cities. In that time, the first volunteer clean-ups (‘subbotniks’) for beautification of the city were held in Omsk. Plenty of gardens, parks, squares, and boulevards appeared in the city. In 1956 and 1958, Omsk got certificates and awards at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition for good results in providing green spaces.

The transformation of Omsk into a ‘garden city’ started in 1953 when the slogan ‘Make Omsk a Garden City’ was used at the joint meeting of the City Council Executive Committee and the Communist Party City Committee. Nikolay Rozhdestvensky was the head of the city at that time. In 1956, Omsk got the certificate of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition. Rozhdestvensky himself was awarded a big gold medal.

On May 5, 1959, there was a meeting of the active members of the party, dedicated to the progress of urban beautification works. The Director of the City Executive Committee Agricultural Department G. Shkulov made a report. He said that the workers and employees of the Landscape Gardening Department of the Leningrad City Council Executive Committee challenged the city residents to socialist competition for early execution of the beautification annual plan.

The news of the competition with the residents of Leningrad spread throughout the city. People spoke about it not only at formal meetings but at work, in transport, in the street, at home. It was discussed by adults, children, scientists, students, and housewives. Everybody got a new burst of strength, energy, and desire to make the city even better. The staff of industrial enterprises, construction projects, universities, tens of thousands of citizens actively participated in the work on Omsk beautification.

The Omsk residents accepted the challenge and started to create green spaces in the city. In 1959, the citizens planted 615 thousand trees, more than a million shrubs, and almost 13.5 million flowers.
The casket by the Omsk resident Abashkin is devoted to this socialist competition.
