A wide variety of materials were used to make boxes at different times: metal, wood, glass and bone. To make them beautiful, they were covered with expensive fabric, carvings, leather, embossing, embroidery and precious stones.

The Kirsanov Local History Museum houses several such items, including this metal box with a key from the end of the 19th century. It is not uncommon for such boxes to be the subject of inspiration for writers of the time.

After the suitcase a small mahogany box with inlays of Karelian birch was brought in… in the middle was a soapbox; behind the soapbox six or seven narrow partitions for razors; then square slots for a sand-shaker and an inkwell, with a hollowed-out boat between them for pens, sealing-waxes, and anything longer; then various partitions with and without lids for the shorter ones, filled with business, funeral, theater, and other tickets, which were put away as keepsakes. The whole upper drawer with all the dividers was taken out, and under it was a space occupied by piles of papers in sheet form, followed by a small hidden money drawer, which slid inconspicuously out the side of the box. It was always so hurriedly pulled out and slid in at the same moment by the owner that it was surely impossible to tell how much money was in there.
Gogol described Chichikov’s box in his work “Dead Souls”

Boxes were more often the property of the rich and noble, and were a beautiful decoration for the interior of any aristocratic home. The box was often custom-made, adorned with precious stones on top and upholstered in silk on the inside, costing more than the jewelry it contained.

An antique box often hid a mystery and could contain extraordinary gimmicks created by skilled craftsmen — double or triple bottoms, hidden compartments, clever locks that work only after a certain sequence of operations. The craftsmen who made them did all sorts of tricks to ensure that the antique box became a reliable guardian of its owner’s secrets.
