One of the oldest in Tambov Region, the Kirsanov Local History Museum was founded in 1923. The brick plastered house with two floors, where the museum is located now, was built in the mid-19th century and belonged to the merchant Mityaev. V. A. Gilyarovsky, F. I. Chaliapin, V. F. Lebedev, N. A. Annenkov spoke in the large hall of the first floor at different times. After the October Revolution the building was nationalized and during the Civil War it was handed over to the Red Army Club where the sessions of the Council of Workers’, Peasants’ and Red Army Deputies were held. Later the club was renamed into the Workers’ Club which then housed the only cinema “Modern” in the town. The Kirsanov Local History Museum was housed in the building in 1946.
The museum now has three departments: History, Nature and Noble Culture. In the nature hall visitors can see minerals and rocks, the fossilized remains of ancient animals that lived millions of years ago, and get to know the local nature and its representatives. In the halls of history and noble culture there is a collection of memorial items of the 17th–19th centuries from the estates of the nobility and merchants’ houses of Tambov region. Here visitors can learn about the history of the development of the region, the people who lived on its territory and the different cultures that inhabited it. The museum has a rich collection of fabrics, samovars, numismatics, antique furniture, clocks, dishes, candlesticks, oil lamps and rare books.
