Rosa majalis is one of the commonest types of wild rose across Russia. The perennial plant belongs to the Rosaceae family, and all varieties of roses were bred from these pleasantly smelling thorny bushes.
#13
The plant can be found in the Nordic and Central Siberian forests, around the Lake Baikal and occasionally even in the Arctic region. The rose prefers growing as a sole plant or in groups along the edge of the wood, forest clearings and as shrubbery along gullies and on meadows.

The rose is an ancient wild shrub, relics of which were unearthed in the mountains of Iran and in the Himalayas. When man started discovering the uses of plants, the rose was among the first, its fruits added to meals and various medicines. Flowers and fruits of the shrub were used as decorations, while the thorny branches provided protection against foes or wild beasts.
The legend has it that the Satan whom the God banished from Heaven decided to return back there and chose the wild rose and its straight thorny branches as a ladder. But the God foresaw the Satan’s plans and bent the rose’s stems. Its thorns have curved downwards ever since.
#5
Rose stems can be up to 2 m high. They are covered by a red brown bark with widely spaced curved thorns which protect the plant against the herbivorous animals.
#6
The shrub blossoms from May to July. 1. Petals of its flowers can be pink as well as dark red. Bumble bees, honeybees, beetles and other insects chose the rose for its pollen. They are attracted by the strong and pleasant smell as well as the bright colour, but the flowers of this perennial shrub have no nectar.

The rose hips ripen in August – early September. They are in fact false fruits, or hypanthium. They are harvested when the fruits turn orange or bright red. It usually happens from late August to October, but it is important to pick them before frosts.
#8
Rose hips are considered a true elixir of health. Their succulent flesh that surrounds the multiple seeds inside contains ten times more vitamin C than orange or lemon peel.
