As soon as researchers at the museum saw this painting for the first time, they called it ‘Sister Alyonushka and brother Ivanushko’. The subjects depicted so clearly in Yefim Chestnyakov’s art work were easily recognizable to inhabitants of Shablovo because they had been familiar with them since childhood. The locals remembered that the artist staged a play with children whose main protagonists were the girl Alyonushka and her brother Ivanushko. Years later, a sketch of the scene for a theater play with the same name was found among Yefim Chestnyakov’s manuscripts. The native villagers, however, pronounced the girl’s name as Olyonushka.

It is possible that Yefim Chestnyakov used the painting “Sister Alyonushka and brother Ivanushko” during his lessons with children. The art work is very expressive and informative for the viewers.
