The artist Valentina Sosnovskikh made this sculpture in 1991, as part of the tea set “Summer Garden”. She depicted a half-naked woman leaning on the tree log. The woman’s hairstyle is casual. In her right hand, she holds a round mirror, and with her left hand, she presses a book to her hip. Her right foot rests on a ball with her knee half bent.
The design of the tea set was based on the sculptures in the park called “Summer Garden” in Saint Petersburg. The museum houses 15 pieces of the service: cups and saucers featuring oak alleys, as well as a teapot, a sugar bowl, a milk jug, and a vase, on which the garden gate was depicted. The tea set also had three figurines of the maidens, copies of the sculptures from the Summer Garden. One of them held a mirror in her hands, the other one held a laurel wreath. And the third one was depicted with a shawl and an owl, a symbol of wisdom. All the items are on display at the museum.
Valentina Sosnovskikh was born in 1958 in Kamensk-Uralsk, in Sverdlovsk Oblast. In 1977, she graduated from the Abramtsevo School of Art and Industrial Design, the Faculty of pottery painting. Later, in 1981, she moved to Novgorod and joined the Porcelain Factory “Proletariy”.
As an adult, Valentina Sosnovskikh went to study again. She entered the Leningrad Higher School of Art and Design named after Vera Mukhina, the faculty of art pottery. She made the “Summer Garden” tea set while studying in Leningrad.
In 1992, Valentina Sosnovskikh moved to Germany and worked there for the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in West Berlin. The artist participated in all-Union and international exhibitions. For example, she exhibited her works at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1989, at several auctions in Berlin in 1992-1994, and the exhibition of the Regional Center for Artistic Creation in 1994-1995.
Five items created by Valentina Sosnovskikh can be seen at the Novgorod Museum-Reserve, and another four are on display in the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin. Some of the items are exhibited as part of the “Museum Porcelain Workshop” of the State Museum of Arts and Culture of Novgorod Land. Her works are also in private collections in Germany, the USA, and France.
