Sugar bowl “The 1100th Anniversary of Novgorod”

The tea set was made at the “Proletary” porcelain factory in 1959, for the 1100th anniversary of Novgorod. On the sugar bowl from the museum’s collection, the city’s railway station is depicted. The painting, for which the masters have used orange paint and gilding, decorates the lid of the item.

The first railway station in Novgorod was built in 1871 with the financial support of merchant Alexander Vargunin. The place for it was chosen not far from the Church of Fyodor Stratilat on Shchirkov Street. The present railway station is located much further away, on the other bank of the Volkhov River.

That same year, the Novgorod Railway was opened. It was built from the Chudovo station of the Nikolaevskaya Railway. The length of the rail track was only 73 km, and the width was less than the standard one, so it was called a narrow-gauge railway. In 1878, the railway was extended to the town of Staraya Russa. Only in 1916, a broad track gauge was placed in service there and the Luga-Novgorod railway line was built.

Gradually, new railway routes were laid around Novgorod, and the railway took its present form. During the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945), the city was almost destroyed, and the building of the railway station also did not survive. The new railway station was built in 1953 by architect Igor Yavein. The railway station became one of the first major post-war buildings.

In 1992, a fire broke out in the building. The structures on the left side were badly damaged. The railway station could have collapsed, so the metropolitan specialists, members of the International Academy of Architecture, prepared a letter to the Ministry of Railways requesting help in the restoration of the building. At the station, repairs were started and took place from 1995 to 1999, then stopped due to insufficient funding.

Two years later, the authorities allocated additional funds for restoration, and then the construction resumed. The restoration of the railway station was carried out by the Saint Petersburg Architectural Bureau “Studio 44”. The bureau was founded by Igor Yavein’s sons, professor at the Moscow Architectural Institute Oleg Yavein, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences, Honored Architect of the Russian Federation, Laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation Nikita Yavein, and architect, restorer Natalya Razina. The renovated railway station was opened in 2002.
