In 1936, the Moscow Children’s Musical Theater offered Prokofiev to write a symphony for children. Prokofiev came up with a scenario about a Young Pioneer Peter who outwitted a wolf. The music for the fairy tale was finished in one week. The fairy tale was premiered at the Moscow Philharmonic and several days later, it was performed at the Children’s Musical Theater. The text was read by Natalia Satz, the founder and director of the theater.
