In this photo, Sergei Prokofiev is depicted conducting the symphonic fairy tale “Peter and the Wolf” in the Great Hall of the Moscow Philharmonic.

In 1936, the Moscow Children’s Musical Theater offered Prokofiev to write a symphony for children. Prokofiev came up with a scenario about a Young Pioneer Peter who outwitted a wolf. The music for the fairy tale was finished in one week. The fairy tale was premiered at the Moscow Philharmonic and several days later, it was performed at the Children’s Musical Theater. The text was read by Natalia Satz, the founder and director of the theater.

Prokofiev’s first wife Lina Ivanovna recalled that day,

For some reason, the first performance of the fairy tale ‘Peter and the Wolf’ was somewhat overlooked, and Sergei Sergeyevich was slightly downhearted. Only three days later, the Children’s Theater initiated another run of ‘Peter and the Wolf’ with a large audience of children. The performance was great. As usual, Natalia Satz read the text enthusiastically. The fairy tale resonated with children very effectively. Our whole family attended the performance, and our sons, aged twelve and seven, were completely thrilled. Moreover, they had never seen so many children in the audience. They remembered that day for their entire lives. Nowadays, their sons (both named after their grandfather Sergei Sergeyevich) also know and love ‘Peter and the Wolf’, the fairy tale by their grandfather.

The musical fairy tale “Peter and the Wolf” was designed to introduce children to the instruments of a symphonic orchestra. Prokofiev himself explained the thought process behind the composition, “Every character in the story had its own motif played each time by the same instrument: the bird was played by the flute, the duck by the oboe, the cat by the clarinet with staccato in the low register, the grandfather by the bassoon, the wolf with three French horns playing chords, Peter with a string quartet, and the shots of the hunters with kettledrums and a bass drum. Before each performance, the instruments should be shown to the children and the themes played for them; during the performance, the children hear the themes repeated several times and learn to recognize the timbres of the different instruments.”

Sergei Prokofiev conducted the premiere of the symphonic fairy tale himself. After that, he often conducted its performances in the largest concert halls, including the Symphony Hall in Boston.
