“Sergei Prokofiev: A Composer Ahead of His Time” is an exhibition that was prepared for the composer’s 125th anniversary. Having welcomed the first guests in late 2016, it provides a unique opportunity to immerse into the atmosphere of Prokofiev’s music and creative ideas.
The exhibition offers its visitors to explore various facets of Sergei Prokofiev’s art. It consists of five sections. The first one is dedicated to Prokofiev’s piano compositions and performances (Prokofiev as a pianist), and the second section tells the story of his symphonic and choral music (Prokofiev as a symphonist and conductor). The third section is housed by the Small Exhibition Hall and deals with theater music, including the composer’s operas and ballets. It is followed by the chamber music section which contains valuable instruments from the Russian National Collection of Unique Musical Instruments. Another important part of the exhibition is the memorial office that was restored based on the models and photographs of Prokofiev’s office. It includes authentic furniture and private possessions of the great composer.
The exhibition makes use of interactive touchscreens in each of its sections, providing every visitor with an opportunity to read Prokofiev’s quotes, excerpts from his autobiography and diaries, look at photographs, and most importantly listen to Prokofiev’s music, some of it performed by the composer himself. One of the central elements of the exhibition is the multimedia calendar that updates every month. Its video content is based on the events from Prokofiev’s life and creative career and commemorates certain dates on a monthly basis.
