“The rules of church singing with znamenny notation” is one of the most valuable Old Believer manuscripts of the Kargopol History, Architecture and Art Museum. Znamenny chant was the main type of Old Russian liturgical singing. The notation means a system written with certain symbols, and it is znamenny because the entries are made with znamena — special signs.
The book is placed in a special binding made of boards covered with real leather. It can be tightly closed with two metal fasteners. When the book is folded, one can see that the connected pages are painted with red paint.
The manuscript was created by the Old Believers of the wanderer’s concord in 1878. The Wanderers are one of the Bespopovsky movements of the Old Believers. “Bespopovsky” means that these believers did not have priests. The movement had a rather radical philosophy: the Old Believers-wanderers believed that “eternal wandering” is the salvation of the soul, a break with the world, isolation from society and the rejection of any civic functions and duties.
The names of the authors are indicated on the manuscript — on a small sheet pasted between sheets 42 and 43, there is an inscription: “писал Прохоръ и Никаноръ” (written by Prokhor and Nikanor). The entry on the spine of the binding also preserved some information about the bookbinder: “Переплел мастер П. Ф. И., книга глаголемая Обиход” (Bound by the Master P. F. I., the book titled “Obikhod”).
The names of the scribes are also repeated on the back of the last sheet. A square with a triangle on top is drawn on it, resembling a house with a gable roof.
There are entries left in the drawing. The first is “Имя писавшего Прохор” (The name of the writer is Prokhor). For each letter of the name, its numerical value is written here. The second is “Писано сия книга Обиходник от Адама 7386 года и Никанора Игнатьевича” (This book “Obikhod” was written by Adam in 7386 and Nikanor Ignatyevich). The date of creation is indicated as an old calendar year 7386, according to modern chronology it corresponds to 1878.
Prokhor Ilyin was born in 1865 and lived until about 1922. He came from a family of Old Believers in the village of Muftyuga, Udora region. Passing to the Old Believers-wanderers, a person was baptized again (sometimes it was called rebaptizm). The worldly name was changed as well. Prokhor Filippovich or simply Prokhor was his new name. This eminent mentor used it to sign resolutions of the wanderers’ councils and a number of his messages to the Kargopol monks.
As a twelve-year-old boy, Prokhor, together with his aged father, went to a schismatic skete (a small monastery), where he learned icon painting skills and the ability to conduct a discourse.
He actively promoted the wanderer’s teaching in his homeland and Kargopol. Possessing the gift of persuasion, the Old Believer inspired many residents to join his philosophy and became one of the leaders of the wanderer’s community in the Kargopol Uyezd at the turn of the 20th century.
