The icons depicting the Nativity of the Virgin were brought to Russia from Byzantium. The most ancient extant images date back to the 10th-11th centuries. In the early Christian icons, the righteous Anna is shown half-seated or seated on a high couch, her figure looks larger than the others; she is flanked by the women with gifts. In front of her there is a mid-wife and female servants washing the newly-born Infant Mary in the font or already passing her to the mother; the Virgin Mary is often depicted lying in a cradle. Joachim was also introduced into the Nativity scene in the later images. The icons are distinguished by the wealth of details such as a table with the gifts and food, a cistern and birds. The iconography of the image from Kirillov is similar to the early icons, but the righteous Joachim is depicted in it. 

The icon was restored by O.V. Lelekova in the All-Union Research Institute for Restoration in 1968.
