…Under the mountain of Ninchurt on Lovozero there is an island Kiitsuel, where the Sami supposedly escaped frequent attacks by Swedes. This island is a later sacrificial place of the Sami. Only reindeer antlers were sacrificed on it. A noid (sorcerer) also lived on this island…

…Up early in the morning. Absolutely quiet. As we left Motka, a tailwind came up and slowly dragged us along. The weather was hot, we set sail and started to sunbathe. Two hours later we were on Kiitsuol. The top of the island, already visible when leaving Motka, stands out clearly. There used to be an altar on this peak. We managed to find its remains in the form of reindeer antlers (35 of them). From the tower placed by the topographers on the island, all the nearby islands and shores of Lovozero are clearly visible…

In autumn the Lapps [Sami] celebrate a special reindeer festival. On this day reindeer are not harnessed; all male Lapps go to Reindeer Island. A kind of ancient sacrifice takes place here. The Lapps put the antlers they brought with them in a cave. According to old people, in ancient times there were competitions of young Lapps, who went out to fight naked, with reindeer antlers on their heads. The winner was rewarded with the most beautiful girl.
