The first illustrations to the novel “Oblomov” were created by Ivan Goncharov’s contemporaries — artists from the second half 19th century.
The Ulyanovsk Museum of Local History houses a watercolor illustration “Oblomov and Olga’s breakup” drawn by Mikhail Kozmin — a copy of the drawing by Vladimir Taburin that was first published in the “Niva” magazine in 1898. At that time, the Saint Petersburg magazine was issued together with free literature supplements — books of Russian and foreign authors, including the whole collection of Ivan Goncharov’s works in twelve volumes. The books were illustrated by Vladimir Taburin and Nikolay Tkachenko.
For one of his illustrations, Taburin chose a melancholic scene describing the end of Ilya Ilyich Oblomov and Olga Ilyinskaya’s relationship,
