Oblomov and Olga’s breakup

The first illustrations to the novel “Oblomov” were created by Ivan Goncharov’s contemporaries — artists from the second half 19th century.

The Ulyanovsk Museum of Local History houses a watercolor illustration “Oblomov and Olga’s breakup” drawn by Mikhail Kozmin — a copy of the drawing by Vladimir Taburin that was first published in the “Niva” magazine in 1898. At that time, the Saint Petersburg magazine was issued together with free literature supplements — books of Russian and foreign authors, including the whole collection of Ivan Goncharov’s works in twelve volumes. The books were illustrated by Vladimir Taburin and Nikolay Tkachenko.

For one of his illustrations, Taburin chose a melancholic scene describing the end of Ilya Ilyich Oblomov and Olga Ilyinskaya’s relationship,

The door opened quietly and Olga appeared. He [Oblomov] glanced at her, and suddenly his spirits dropped; his joy vanished utterly: Olga seemed to have grown older. She was pale, but her eyes glittered; her closed lips and every feature of her face revealed the presence of an intense inner life, bound as with ice by her enforced calm and immobility. In her eyes he read a decision; he did not yet know what it was, but his heart thumped as it had never done before.

The drawing shows Oblomov sitting in an armchair with a depressed look on his face, hunched over and resting his head on his hand. Olga leans toward Oblomov as if trying to comfort him. The artist meticulously depicted the interior details — the picture on the wall, the floor lamp, the velvet upholstery, and the fringe on the chair seats.

In 1952, the year of Goncharov’s 140th anniversary, the painter and watercolorist Mikhail Kozmin colored the illustrations by Taburin and Tkachenko. By that time, he was already well-known for his many portraits, landscapes, historical and genre paintings, as well as revolutionary ones. In 1927, Kozmin started to work on a series of portraits, depicting famous people connected with Simbirsk (and Ulyanovsk afterward). The series also included a portrait of Ivan Goncharov. Illustrations of the writer’s works have been on display in the Goncharov Memorial Room at the Ulyanovsk Museum of Local History since 1954. They are currently part of the permanent collection of the Ivan Goncharov Historical and Memorial Center Museum dedicated to the writer and his characters.
