In August 1928, Sergey’s dream to see the Japanese theater with his own eyes came true. The “Kabukiza troupe” arrived in Moscow, headed by the actor and director Ichikawa Sadanji II: he is sometimes called the “Japanese Stanislavsky.” These were the first full-scale tour of the Kabuki Theater outside of Japan. It might be possible that Eisenstein contributed to inviting the theater to the USSR: after “Potemkin, ” he had been elected to the board of the VOKS (the All-Union Society for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries).
