Nikolay Solomin
They brought the bride
#12
In the painting They brought the bride painter Nikolay Solomin depicted one of the key moments of the village wedding - when the newlyweds come to the groom’s house. On the porch they are met by an elderly woman, most likely the mother, holding a loaf and a saltcellar on an embroidered towel. In the old days it was also customary to bless the young with an icon, but in the Soviet times religious rites were not welcomed, and this custom vanished.

The bride and the groom are in the center of the composition in the picture. The painter emphasized this by the circular arrangement of the figures on the foreground and the middle distance of the painting: the eyes of the audience glide over them, as if in a spiral, but all the time return to the newlyweds. In addition, the groom looks noticeably taller than the people who stand next to him.

In the clothes of the characters the painter reflected the Soviet fashion of the 1970s and 1980s. The bride wears a short white dress: at that time lush outfits with laces and embroidery have not yet come into fashion. Many women put on bright dresses with floral pattern and light headscarves - such an outfit in Soviet villages was considered festive. The girls in the foreground have bows woven into their braids.

In 1936, Solomin graduated from an art college and enrolled at the Surikov Institute. However, he did not manage to finish his studies: the war began. The painter got to the front as a member of the People’s Militia, reached Berlin, was in the German captivity. He got the diploma only after the Victory.
#15
Nikolay Solomin was inspired in his creative work by paintings by Ilya Repin and Valentin Serov. He created realistic paintings, but often used expressive means characteristic of the Impressionism: wide quick strokes, color contrasts, play of light and shadow.
The artist painted mostly everyday scenes from the village life: harvesting, moments of rest, rural holidays. However, this genre was not the only one in his creative work. Solomin also created historical paintings and portraits, pastel still lifes and pencil drawings.
